Cuckooing
What is Cuckooing?
Cuckooing happens when people target the homes of vulnerable adults and take over their property. The home may be used for any criminal purpose, including drug dealing, sexual crimes or storing weapons.
Did you know the term cuckooing takes its name from cuckoos, who push other birds out of their nests to take it for their own. Those most vulnerable of being exposed to cuckooing are people with mental health needs or are drug users themselves.
An adult at risk can be exploited and coerced to participate in criminal acts. Young people vulnerable to criminal exploitation can also be associated with these properties. Cuckooed residents may be victims of crime and neighbours may be affected by anti-social behaviour and localised criminal activity.
Some of the signs of cuckooing could be:
- Someone who usually lives alone suddenly has multiple visitors coming in and out of their property
- People exchanging small packages or cash outside the property
- Increase in anti-social behaviour and littering in the area
There is a cuckooing panel in Islington where you can discuss cases. If you have any concerns around cuckooing or would like more information you can email cuckooing@islington.gov.uk or visit Cuckooing | Islington Council. You can also help us by sharing this poster to raise awareness around cuckooing.
